Stop Asking AI to Think. Ask It to Build the Tool.

A Device to Use A.I. on Files You Wouldn’t Share With Cloud A.I.

Some Files Should Never Touch the Cloud. Use Local A.I. Instead.
Everybody has something they would never share with ChatGPT. You are not going to load your bank statements. You are not going to load payroll. You are not going to load a patient file if you are a clinician. You are not going to load bid books or last year’s numbers if you are in a commercial role.
You can basically guarantee that those files will leak into the world and get used in a way you did not want.
You still want AI on them though, right? Insights. Time back. A process that does not require hiring a developer or buying another software package. That used to be the fork: share the files, or do the work by hand. It is no longer true.
Desktop apps are not local
Claude Desktop and the other AI desktop apps still reach out to the internet for their model. The documents may sit on your machine. The processing still happens in the cloud. It is more secure than pasting into a chat window. It is still not secure.
I am not putting patient data into Claude Desktop. I will not do it.
What I will do is have Claude build me a program I can run on those files.
Describe the files. Keep the files.
You have 35 documents. Give it the headers if it is a spreadsheet. Say you do not want them in the cloud. Say what you want done: an analysis, a process, a tracker.
Or receipts. Every time you drop a receipt into a folder on the desktop, you want a program watching that folder, digitizing the receipt, and writing it into the spreadsheet that lives in the same folder.
Give it that description. It builds the program. From then on, the desktop app watches the folder and does what you asked. No cloud. No extra AI call. No internet required for the daily run.
- Name the files you will never paste into ChatGPT. Those are the local jobs.
- Do not confuse a desktop app with local processing. Most still call the cloud.
- Describe the headers and the outcome. Ask Claude to build a program that runs on the folder.
- For daily chores, a watcher on a local folder beats another SaaS login.
- If you need a local model, pick the one you actually trust, not the one with the biggest demo.
This post came out of a real conversation at the AI Essentials Roundtable, the small group I run for business owners who want to actually use AI instead of just reading about it. We meet every other week, screen-share real builds, and steal each other’s wins. If that sounds useful, details are here: tablelandpartners.com/ai_essentials_roundtable
