A Device to Use A.I. on Files You Wouldn’t Share With Cloud A.I.

Your A.I. Can Now Click Through Websites For You.

Google A.I. Is the Search Result. Is Your Website In It?
Your website is not the first thing your customer sees in Google search results about you. Google made updates to their search results. The first thing you see is Paid Ads that don’t really look like ads. Then, a new, tall AI answer section highlighting those websites optimized for AI. Then, if the person is still scrolling, the old list of blue SEO website links.
What sits on the page now
Think of four layers, top to bottom.
| Order on the page | What it is | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Paid units | Sponsored results and shopping cards. On many commercial searches they sit first and wear almost no “Ad” costume. | If you buy search ads, you are still buying the top of the page. If you do not, you start behind a block that looks like a result. |
| 2. The AI answer | AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google writes a reply and names a few sources. Local knowledge panels are picking up the same AI Overview label. | This is the new first result for a lot of questions. You either get named in it or you do not. |
| 3. Company cards inside the AI | When Google is confident, it pops a business card: hours, rating, a book or call button, sometimes inventory language. | Clean Business Profile data and clear pages get named. Messy ones get skipped or misquoted. |
| 4. Organic links | The classic SEO list. | Still real. Just lower than it used to be. Ranking #1 is no longer the same as being seen first. |
You can finally see if you are in the AI box
Search Console launched a Generative AI performance report in June. As of August 31 it is rolled out worldwide. It shows impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Go look at it, see how your website is performing.
It does not show clicks. It does not show the words people typed. Sites without enough AI impressions may not get a report yet. That is Google’s limit, not a bug in your login.
There was a logging dip in mid-August that Google called a reporting error, not a real drop. If your chart falls off a cliff on August 13, read the annotation before you rewrite the site.
How you open it: Search Console, Performance, then the Generative AI report. Look at pages, countries, devices, dates. Then Google your own business name on a phone that is not signed into the owner account to see what shows up.
What this means for your company
If you only measure organic webtraffic rankings, you are measuring the floor of the page. The fight moved up.
Paid search still buys the first look. That is not new. What is new is that the unpaid look is now an AI paragraph that may name a competitor and skip you.
Pages that answer a real question in plain sentences get used as sources. Pages that dance around the question to save the good part for a contact form do not. The same writing rules we already use on this site apply here: start with the point, say what applies to the reader, link to the related page with real words.
AEO is not a plugin. It is the same work as a good service page, plus a Business Profile that matches the page, plus the new report so you can see whether any of it landed.
Two things not to do
Do not flip Google’s new opt-out that hides you from AI features unless you have a legal reason. Sites that opt out get no impressions and no traffic from those features.
Do not rebuild the whole site around one week’s model news. Open the report. Read the public listing. Fix the facts.
- Open Search Console and look for the Generative AI performance report. Worldwide as of August 31.
- Note impressions and pages. Do not expect clicks or queries. They are not in the report.
- Google your business name on a phone that is not the owner login.
- Fix the public Business Profile if hours, phone, or category are wrong.
- Write one page that answers the question a customer actually types, in the first paragraph.
The listing an assistant will quote out loud is a different job. That write-up is A.I. assistants can now book appointments.
